E-2 – SOUTH PORTUGAL

The excursion to South Portugal includes a visit to a Mine in Alentejo, on the Palaeozoic hard rocks, a trip on Algarve region, the southernmost region in Portugal, including the visit to a natural park, and a visit to Sines Area, on the western coast of Portugal, both Meso-Cenozoic areas. The excursion finishes with the observation of some land use problems on the area of Seixal.
22 September – Visit to São Domingos Mine, which prehistoric activity started before the roman presence in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Discussion of geology and hydrogeology of the area (with the collaboration of INETI). Lunch in the field. Trip to Faro and night at a Hotel in Faro.
23 September – Barrier Islands in South Portugal (Algarve). Evolution, morphology and dynamics of the Algarve beaches (with the collaboration of the Algarve University). Lunch in a typical restaurant at Tavira beach port (Quatro Águas). Back to Faro before dinner. Night at the hotel in Faro.
24 September – Hydrogeology of Central Algarve, a field trip to springs and streams. Discussion of conceptual flow models of the aquifer systems in this area (with the collaboration of the Algarve University). Lunch in a typical restaurant at Alte (a very nice small town in the Algarve Mountains, about 30 km from the coast). Back to Faro before dinner. Third night at the hotel in Faro.
25 September – Field trip to the Sines Aquifer System and Hydrogeology of the Seixal Area. Visit to water wells for supply of drinking water in the Area of Santo André and environmental aspects of the Sines Aquifer System (with the collaboration of Coordinating Commission of the Alentejo Region and Évora University). Lunch. Ferryboat trip from the peninsula of Tróia to Setubal. Visit to areas of interest for the discussion of criteria for definition of recharge maps and associated land-use problems in the Seixal area (with the collaboration of the New University of Lisbon). Arrival to Lisbon, end of the field trip.
Obs.: The excursion price includes three nights in a two star hotel at Faro (at the centre of the town, including breakfast), lunch in the four days of the excursion and the bus transport for all the days of the excursion. Dinner is not included in this price: The participants are encouraged to discover the delights of Portuguese restaurants in Faro centre on all the days of the excursion. |
