CITY OF THE CONGRESS
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and lies on the north bank of the Tagus Estuary, on the European Atlantic coast. It is the westernmost city in continental Europe. Greater Lisbon has an area of approximately 1,000 km. The city lies more or less in the centre of the country, approximately 300 km from the Algarve in the south and 400 km from the northern border with Spain. Lisbon offers a wide variety of options to the visitor, including beaches, countryside, mountains and areas of historical interest only a few kilometres away from the city centre.
Sintra is an inexhaustible attraction. The perfect symbiosis between nature and its built heritage, which led to its classification by UNESCO as World Heritage, at the category of Cultural Landscape, in 1995.
The proximity of the sea also makes the region a unique destination, since it has some of the most beautiful Atlantic beaches, including Praia Grande and Praia das Maçãs. Further south is Cabo da Roca, the most western point in mainland Europe, immortalized by the Portuguese poet Camões as the place “where the earth finishes and the sea starts …”.
The beauty and the temperate climate of Lisbon has transformed the city in one of the main places in Europe for the organization of international Congresses.
The airport is situated practically inside Lisbon, with easy access by taxi to the centre of the city.
